The West Coast swept Shirley Schmidt into it’s beauty after having spent the earlier years of her life in the open prairies of Manitoba and also the lush fruit country of Ontario. She left her profession in music and entered the world of the dedicated watercolorist.

As an Active Member of the Canadian Federation of Artists, she concentrates on the watercolour art form with a solely transparent palette. Watercolors continue to surprise her with their possibilities for both the boldness and the delicacy needed to portray the nature subjects that she most enjoys painting.

The sense of process and myriad layering within the work reflect well the complexities and the often unanswerable questions that make up our human story.

Living in Victoria with her husband, she paints in her sun-filled studio where she holds weekly classes and invites monthly workshop groups to join the adventure that is watercolor painting.
